"НИЖЕГОРОДСКИЙ ПОГРАНИЧНИК" В ЧКАЛОВСКЕ И ПУРЕХЕ
The first ever Antarctic Ice Marathon races were held at the weekend of January 7th / 8th deep in the Antarctic Circle at 80 Degrees South. The snow and ice course followed a 26.2-mile circuit around the foothills of the Ellsworth mountains with competitors having to contend with altitude, sub-zero temperatures and strong katabatic winds blowing from the South Pole. Evgeniy Gorkov of Russia won the menÕs marathon in a time of 5:09:38 with John 0ÕRegan of Ireland second (5:16:31) and Steven Seaton (UK) third (5:39:35). The womenÕs event was won by ScotlandÕs Wendy MacKinnon in a time of 6:33:30. Richard Donovan of Ireland ran the first ever 100k on the continent, completing the distance in a time of 15:43:55.

Collect photo of WW2 Dornier. See masons story MNPLANE. Work began yesterday (Fri) to raise the only surviving World War Two Nazi bomber from its watery grave in the English Channel. The Dornier 17 was shot down during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and disappeared for 70 years beneath the murky waves. But a group of divers spotted the aircraft lying 50ft deep in the English Channel in 2008. Experts from the RAF Museum, Wessex Archaeology and the Port of London Authority used sonar scans to confirm the aircraft as the Dornier Do 17Z Werke number 1160. The plane - nicknamed the Luftwaffe's 'flying pencil' bombers because of its narrow fuselage - has been remarkable well preserved with some of its undercarriage tyres still inflated. The retrieval of the plane, which has minor damage to the forward cockpit, observation windows and propellers, from the Goodwin Sands will be the biggest recovery of its kind in British waters. Experts predict the operation - funded by a National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) of £345,000 - will take three weeks to complete.
